Purpose of Role:
- Lead and manage the financial reporting function for the Mexico business, ensuring accurate, timely and compliant statutory, management and shareholder reporting across a complex legal entity and project structure.
- The role is responsible for overseeing financial reporting activities for approximately 15 legal entities supporting three major upstream oil and gas projects in Mexico, ensuring compliance with IFRS, Mexican generally accepted accounting principles and tax reporting requirements, joint venture obligations and internal governance standards.
- The position acts as a key technical accounting and reporting advisor to the Mexico leadership team, corporate finance, auditors and external stakeholders, supporting effective decision-making, financial control, risk management and regulatory compliance in a highly regulated and capital-intensive operating environment.
- This role leads a team of financial reporting professionals and plays a critical role in strengthening internal controls, improving reporting processes and supporting business growth, project development and operational performance.
Critical Responsibilities:
- Promote a strong control and compliance culture across the financial reporting team, ensuring adherence to internal control requirements and documentation standards.
- Support the Head of Financial Reporting in coordinating the month-end close process, ensuring timely execution, proper review, and resolution of key issues across entities.
- Ensure that all key balances and reporting outputs are supported by complete, accurate, and auditable documentation, with appropriate follow-up of outstanding items and reconciling differences.
Areas of Accountability, Responsibility and Competence:
Financial Reporting & Governance
- Lead and coordinate all internal and external audit activities, acting as the primary point of contact for auditors and ensuring timely delivery, high-quality outputs, and effective resolution of audit findings.
- Maintain alignment with Corporate Accounting and Group Reporting teams, ensuring consistent application of accounting policies, reporting standards, and timely submission of corporate reporting packages.
- Provide technical accounting position papers and analysis for review by Corporate Accounting where required.
- Lead the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and reporting packages for multiple Mexican legal entities and upstream oil and gas projects.
- Ensure accurate accounting treatment for complex upstream transactions, including joint venture accounting, production sharing arrangements, CAPEX accounting, asset retirement obligations, intercompany transactions and foreign exchange impacts.
- Oversee balance sheet integrity, ensuring all accounts are properly reconciled, supported, and accurately reflected as part of the financial close process.
Technical Accounting & Business Support
- Provide technical accounting guidance and interpretation of IFRS and local accounting requirements.
- Support business initiatives, project developments, restructurings and commercial transactions through financial analysis and accounting assessment.
- Partner with tax, treasury, commercial, procurement, project controls and operations teams to ensure alignment of financial reporting impacts.
- Support management decision-making through high-quality financial analysis, variance analysis and reporting insights.
- Review and assess accounting implications of significant contracts, financing arrangements and operational activities.
Team Leadership & Stakeholder Management
- Maintain strong working relationships and regular communication with Corporate Accounting, Group Reporting and regional finance leadership teams.
- Ensure alignment between local reporting requirements and global finance expectations, timelines and governance standards.
- Lead develop and mentor the financial reporting team, fostering a high-performance and collaborative culture.
- Allocate resources and prioritise activities to ensure delivery against reporting deadlines and business objectives.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reporting quality, efficiency and automation.
Systems, Processes & Continuous Improvement
- Lead improvements to financial reporting processes, systems and controls.
- Support implementation and optimization of SAP and other financial reporting tools.
- Identify process inefficiencies, reporting risks and automation opportunities.
- Ensure reporting processes remain aligned with evolving regulatory and business requirements.
Critical Skills, Qualifications, Experience, etc. :
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of IFRS and Mexican statutory financial reporting requirements.
- Advanced understanding of financial controls, consolidation and reporting processes.
- Knowledge of upstream oil and gas accounting principles and joint venture accounting.
- Proficient in using SAP and other financial reporting systems.
- Strong analytical skills to interpret complex financial data.
Non-Technical Skills:
- Exceptional leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and capacity to manage multiple priorities.
Professional Experience:
- Significant experience in financial reporting, accounting or controllership roles within the oil and gas, energy or other capital-intensive industries.
- Experience reporting for multiple legal entities and complex organizational structures.
- Experience leading teams in a multinational environment.
- Proven track record in audit management, process improvement and financial governance.
- Strong experience managing internal and external audits in a multinational environment.
- Experience coordinating with corporate finance functions in matrix organizations.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline.
- Professional accounting qualification preferred (CPA, ACA, ACCA, ICAS or equivalent).
Language:
- English: Proficient (written and spoken).
- Spanish: Intermediate or above.
